Taiwan Travel Guide: SIM Card, WiFi, and EasyCard Tips for First-Timers
Planning your first trip to Taiwan? One of the first things you’ll need to figure out is how to stay connected and how to get around easily. Between SIM cards, portable WiFi devices, and transportation cards, the options can be overwhelming for a first-time traveler.
As someone who recently visited Taiwan on a budget, I also had the same dilemma. After comparing all three, I found that the Taiwan EasyCard via Klook was the most convenient choice—especially for first-time and budget travelers. Let me break it down for you.
Option 1: Portable WiFi Device
Portable WiFi is great if you’re traveling as a group because you can share one device and split the cost. However, it comes with a few downsides:
- You have to carry an extra gadget with you everywhere.
- It needs charging, which can be a hassle if you’re out the whole day.
- You’ll have to return it before leaving Taiwan, which can be stressful if you’re rushing to the airport. We had a late night flight going back home and I saw that the pick up area was closed. I am not sure where you can return the Wi-Fi devices during closed hours.
Option 2: Local SIM Cards (Purchased at the Airport)
Buying a SIM card at the airport is also an option. But here’s the thing—there are usually long lines, and it’s hard to compare packages when you’re tired from your flight. Some SIMs also don’t include transportation perks, so you’ll still need to get an MRT card separately.
Here's a comparison of what you can save if you go for Klook's EasyCard.
Option 3: Taiwan Data SIM Card via Klook (My Recommendation 💡)
This is the option I went for, and honestly, I think it’s the best choice for first-timers. The EasyCard has no expiration date and can only be used by one person at a time.
Here’s why:
✅ No need to return it — Once you pop it into your phone, that’s it! No rushing to return a device before your flight.
✅ Comes with MRT card (EasyCard) — Perfect for exploring Taipei and other cities hassle-free. You can use it for MRT rides, buses, and even in convenience stores. You can reload at 7eleven branches and MRT stations.
You can select the EasyCard with no deposit, TWD 200 deposit, or TWD 400 deposit that best suits your needs. We chose TWD 200 but I highly recommend that you get the TWD 400. We had to reload again after one ride from airport to our hotel.
✅ Already preloaded with data and credit — You don’t have to line up at the counter or figure out top-ups right away.
✅ Super convenient pick-up at the airport — Just show your voucher, provide your passport and Taiwan Arrival Card (as your form of identification as non-residents), get your SIM, and you’re ready to explore Taiwan.
The pick up point is at Taoyuan Airport (TPE) Terminal 1: Unite Traveler Counter. When you reach the arrival hall, and turn left and go straight to the end.
For me, this combo really made my trip smoother and budget-friendly. I didn’t have to worry about WiFi batteries dying, or wasting time buying separate cards for transport.

Transportation in Taiwan: Why You’ll Love the EasyCard
Taiwan has one of the most efficient MRT systems I’ve ever used. With an MRT card (EasyCard or iPASS), you can:
- Skip the ticket machines and just tap in/out.
- Ride buses without fumbling for coins.
- Even use it at 7-Eleven or FamilyMart to pay for snacks or drinks!
Since the Klook SIM already includes this, you save time and effort.
